Fashion Forecast | High-Low Hems

Fashion Forecast | High-Low Hems. Debating between a long or short dress? Looks like the fashion wizards have come up with an easy fix. Turns out you can have it all. Formally known as a fishtail gown—and less formally (but way more cleverly) referred to as a mullet dress—the ingenious design manages to show some leg while maintaining the elegant fun-factor of a train. Win win.

Love it or hate it, this polarizing trend has infiltrated a multitude of runway shows and celebs have already taken advantage of its versatile powers. If you dare to delve into the world of indecisive hemlines, cruise these photos for some inspiration. Side note: Fantastic shoes required.

Celebrity favorite Antonio Berardi created a modern angelic vibe with his collection of floating ivory dresses like this. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore a similar glimmering look from the designer at the Elle Style Awards. Now, if only she was this bold with her footwear.

Fashion darling Blake Lively is usually the first to try out unconventional looks. When she wore this cerulean Emilio Pucci gown, however, she made the asymmetrical hem look like a classic.

As if having Liam Hemsworth on her arm wasn't enough, Miley Cyrus made us do a double-take at Muhammad Ali's Celebrity Fight Night in one of our favorite looks from Jenny Packham. The tangerine hue of this lingerie-inspired dress is the perfect way to slip into spring.

J. Mendel's Art Deco collection was a big hit with its clean lines and selective flashes of color. The fishtail concept was utilized to the fullest with the eye-catching chartreuse lining of this layered skirt.

Selena Gomez channeled Elvira for the MTV Video Music Awards—a hip, young Elvira, that is. She loves a healthy dose of red carpet drama and this Gothic gown fit the bill.

DKNY debuted this glamorous day dress in hot pink on their spring runway. This was made to be worn while lounging under a cabana in Las Vegas. It even has its own companion sun hat!

Leave it to Bar Refaeli to find a way to show some leg in a floor-sweeping gown. But really, who can blame her? This midnight blue number exemplified her unique sense of style (and ridiculous hotness).

Vera Wang stepped out of her comfort zone for spring with futuristic cutout dresses, graphic prints, and revealing hemlines like this one. Beyonce's little sis, Solange Knowles, has alreadly made a perfect model for the unusual collection.

Sophia Bush showcased a playful take on the trend with this floral fuchsia Halston Heritage dress at the Genesis Awards. She dressed it up with black pumps and a gold clutch but it could be just as easily worn beltless with flip-flops and a straw tote.

The Alexander McQueen collections are always magnificent works of art. For spring, Sarah Burton's creations involved airy embellished trains like this. Indie fashion queen Florence Welch just recently wore one of the line's leg-baring peach gowns to the Brit Awards.
